HISTORY OF CORPUS CHRISTI PARISH
The 117th parish of the Joliet Diocese officially began its
liturgical life with the first Eucharistic celebration on September
3, 1989. Our new parish, Corpus Christi, was announced in early
summer of 1989. During that summer new parishioners were drawn from
the three surrounding parishes: St. Luke in Carol Stream, St.
Isidore in Bloomingdale and Resurrection in Wayne. In addition, the
new homes being built in the area bring new parishioners each week.
Three hundred families were registered by that first Eucharistic
celebration.
Liturgical and service ministries were established immediately, and
religious education became a top priority. After all, in this young
community there are many children. Religious education expanded
quickly with approximately 100 students that first year to almost
1000+ currently.
By August of 1990, Corpus Christi had grown to 500 families.
Committees were established to begin the building process. In early
1991 the diocese gave permission to begin a fund raising campaign.
In 2005 that debt was retired.
Our first parish offices were in Brust Funeral Home on Gary Avenue
while our parish house was being built. In October of 1991, Fr.
Gemskie and the parish staff moved into the parish house that serves
as a residence for the pastor as well as staff offices and meeting
space for all parishioners. We began with our first Mass at the
Benjamin School. As we grew, we also celebrated Saturday Liturgies
at Our Savior Lutheran Church. We out grew Our Savior Lutheran
Church and moved our Saturday Liturgies to Glenbard North High
School.
On August 8, 1993 over 400 parishioners attended the groundbreaking
for the first phase of our worship space, education space and social
area. November 22, 1994 our House of Prayer was dedicated by Bishop
Joseph Imesch reminding us that we dedicate more than a building, we
dedicate ourselves.
The summer of 2004 held many exciting 15th Anniversary Celebrations
for our parish. And yet, we have come to believe and witness that we
are a community of believers, we celebrate life, God’s gift, out of
a sense of profound gratitude each time we gather. Week after week
we hear God’s word and receive His life giving nourishment of the
Eucharist.
Come, celebrate, and join us on our journey of faith in the Lord.
