RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION
OF ADULTS
Becoming a Catholic
What is the RCIA?
The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is the process by
which people become members of the Roman Catholic Church. The
process is concerned with the total formation of the person into
- Believing with the Church community (doctrinal
formation)
- Living with the Church community (practical formation)
- Praying with the Church community (liturgical formation)
- Serving with the Church community (apostolic formation)
This gradual development culminates in the celebration of the
initiation sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and the Eucharist at
the Easter Vigil.
Who may participate in the RCIA?
The Rite is designed primarily for those seeking Baptism; that is
those not baptized previously. However, because of the nature of
conversion as an ongoing reality, the RCIA can be adapted for those
baptized in other Christian denominations, now seeking membership in
the Roman Catholic Church. At Corpus Christi Parish, adults baptized
in the Catholic faith but not confirmed are also welcomed through
the RCIA process.
What are the basic principles of the RCIA?
The principles deduced from the early Church initiation practice,
are the basic guidelines from which the RCIA has been created.
- The core reality of Christian initiation is conversion.
- The gradual movement towards Christian initiation is a
process and not a program.
- A close relationship exists between catechesis and
liturgy
- The initiation of new members is the concern and
responsibility of the entire community.
- The primary subject of the process is the adult.
- The Word of God is central to the formation process.
- The truths of the Christian faith are unfolded through
the
experience of the Church's dominant symbols
The RCIA here at Corpus Christi
This process begins in September and continues to the end of May.
Sessions are held every week in the Parish House. For additional
information, and registration in the RCIA, please call the parish
office.

ADULT CONTINUING FORMATION
Sharing the Light of Faith is the National Catechetical Directory
written by the American Bishops in 1978. Simply put, it is the
directive for religious education in the United States. The bishops
state in this lengthy document that "the primary reason for adult
catechesis is to help adults grow to maturity of faith . . . adult
religious education stands at the center of the Church's educational
mission."
Our purpose as Christians is to follow Christ and become more like
Him. To fulfill this goal, it is necessary to develop the full
potential of our body, mind and soul. Corpus Christi's Adult
Continuing Formation sponsors programs in an attempt to develop each
of the aspects of our humanness.
Some of the programs offered through our adult education sessions
include:
Scripture study (daytime and evening)
Liturgy Ministry Formation
Updating of faith concepts
Lenten spirituality series
Missions
Other opportunities will be offered throughout the year. Watch
the bulletin for details.

Rooted in Christ Series
“Rooted In Christ”
Adult Faith Formation Series
Are you interested in a refresher course in
Catholic Christianity?
To answer the call of many in our faith community, Corpus Christi
will be offering a series of Adult Faith Formation Workshops
entitled, “Rooted in Christ”.
Many Adult Catholics have never had an opportunity to take a course
on Scripture, Christology, or the Sacraments. Neither have they been
introduced to a “lived” spirituality, through which they can
express their faith in the world in which they live.
The series of twelve workshops entitled “Rooted in Christ”
address the following:
- “I Believe in God”
- “God’s Relationship with Jesus”
- “Introduction to Christology”
- “Jesus of History, Christ of Faith”
- “Origins of the Gospels”
- “Holy Spirit, Giver of Life”
- “Symbols of the Holy Spirit”
- “Models of the Church”
- “The Church as Servant”
- “The Seven Sacraments”
- “Christian Morality Basics”
- “Making Moral Decisions”
Contact Deacon Tom (483-4673 x102
ccdeacon@sbcglobal.net)
to register. Deacon Tom is also available to answer any questions
about the program.
The goal of the twelve workshops is to help adults learn the faith
both “in the head” and “from the heart” and to
experience all the ingredients that make us Catholic.
